Obituary for Jeanie Doyle

Barbara Jean Doyle – “Jeanie” – Born October 8, 1942 in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Jeanie trained to become a Licensed Practical Nurse at Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston before eventually moving to Oklahoma City to first work at Presbyterian Hospital, then Mercy, where she spent her last 25 years in nursing because it “felt like home.” With her intuitive, sharp mind and infectious laughter Jeanie drew such admiration and respect from her team members in Oncology, Hospice and Rehab, that one of her bosses quipped, “I wish I had 20 more nurses just like her!”

Befriended during what she discreetly described as “a difficult time in my life,” Jeanie was unofficially adopted into this body of “family members,” beginning with Vicky Osterheldt; then Vicky’s daughter, Margee Osterheldt, who became her closest friend; Vicky’s other daughter, Nancy Lemelin; and Margee’s family: daughter Natalie Sherrill, SIL Rob & granddaughter Charlotte, with whom Jeanie had a special bond from birth.

In 2003 Jeanie was in a near-fatal auto accident on the way home from work and spent many months recuperating at OU’s and Mercy’s facilities, miraculously recovering most of her mobility and speech, confounding the specialists with her indomitable spirit and energy. Yet because her recovery wasn’t enough to enable her to perform CPR on a patient, she was finally forced to retire in March of 2004, but not before they gave her a Pillar of Mercy award for her spirit of determination. And the professional crowd of her peers stood and gave her a rousing ovation that brought tears to many eyes. She accepted the award and announced, “I love nursing!”

Retired did not mean idle, as Jeanie loved traveling, and she eventually became involved in Bible Study Fellowship with Margee and making true friends wherever she went of adults and children alike, and learning so many wonderful new things about God’s Word. Jeanie loved her pets, Wrinkles, Rambo, on down to Fauntleroy, Michener, Anneleis, Louisa, and Sibby. It was a difficult day when she realized she was unable to care for a pet, so friends often came by to share their little dogs to visit.

Jesus decided heaven had waited long enough for this gem of a lady, and on January 24, 2023, He visited her hospital bedside and carefully gathered her in His arms, taking her with Him as family sang over her:
“When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh may I then in Him be found,
Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand. All other ground is sinking …..” (And with that she was gone.)

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and Crossings Community Center and Clinic.
