Obituary for Carol Jean Titus (Aken)
Carol Jean Titus was born on November 27, 1948, to James William Aken and Elvie Holmes Aken in Oklahoma City. She graduated from Northwest Classen in the class of 1967. In 1971, she met Randy Titus. They were married in 1972 and celebrated their 50th anniversary this past April. They were blessed with two children, Kristie Hurd née Titus, and Jennifer Gordon née Titus.
Carol was a devoted homemaker and community volunteer throughout her life. She was heavily involved in her children’s schooling and extra-curriculars, serving on the Parent-Teacher Association, as a Bluebird Troop leader, and a member of the Kerr McGee Swim Club board. Carol was always quick to act to address any problem she saw; when she noticed how expensive it was for individual families to order swim team equipment, she founded the Kerr McGee “Swim Trunk,” a non-profit organization that made bulk equipment orders and returned all proceeds to the team.
In addition to her devotion to her family, Carol was well known for her community engagement. She was elected president of her homeowner’s association, sat on the Oklahoma City Community Action Center board, and volunteered for the county election board. For years, Carol went door-to-door fundraising for the American Heart Society.
Carol loved to be busy and especially enjoyed entertaining in her home. She was regularly seen taking long morning walks with her dogs. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed warm days on sandy beaches. Carol was a dedicated gardener, with a special talent for nurturing tropical flowers.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, James Aken. She is survived by her mother, Elvie Aken, her husband, Randy Titus, her daughter Kristie Hurd, her daughter Jennifer Gordon and husband Randall, her granddaughter Elizabeth Carter and husband Thomas, her granddaughter Meghan Gordon, her grandson Jacob Gordon, and her great-granddaughter Graceyn Carter.
The family will hold a celebration of life at the Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary North Colonial Chapel at 13125 N MacArthur Blvd on January 7 at 2 PM with a reception to follow. Flowers or memorial contributions to the American Heart Society are all welcome.
