Obituary for Johnnie Lee Bufkin

Johnnie was born on September 01, 1945 in Gorman, TX, the son of J. Monroe and Eulala Bufkin. He had one older brother, Ronnie. For the first nine years of Johnnie’s life, his father farmed family land in Texas, but they moved to Marlow, OK for a job in the oil patch when Johnny was in the third grade. There, he developed a wide circle of friends, enjoying all the adventures of young men in a small town, including a motorcycle gang mounted on Cushmans. Johnnie was musically inclined, playing trombone in the school band as well as playing guitar and banjo with family. Midway through his junior year the family moved to Moore, OK but Johnnie’s heart remained in Marlow & was changed forever on the Fourth of July 1963 when his childhood best friend introduced him to his girlfriend‘s cousin, Andra Kay Fink. That night, one both would long remember, they fell in love and were married August 25, 1966. The love birds would welcome two daughters, Julie and Jessica, and two grandsons, Jordan and Leo. While serving his country for seven years in the Air Force Reserves as a fuel technician at Tinker Air Force Base, Johnnie found his calling in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He started as a driver’s license examiner, attended the Patrol Academy, and advanced through the ranks until he was a First Lieutenant in charge of fraudulent driver’s license investigation, a unit he helped create and organize. He served with honor in the Patrol for almost 30 years and retired in 1998. In addition to family & friends, Johnnie’s life included a number of hobbies. He restored cars and built a remarkable street rod called the “Pink Panther,” a ’39 Chevy that won a number of trophies at car shows and parades. He had a number of motorhomes, working his way up to a pusher that was a home away from home. He was an unreformed collector, ranging from old clocks & watches to jewelry and three-wheeled Cushmans. He loved dogs, especially Boston Terriers, always kept a work bench to fix things, and occasionally jammed with a blue grass group of friends. For Johnnie, life was an adventure filled with too many opportunities to fit into one life. He will be remembered as a loving family man, a trusted and treasured friend, and a multi-talented individual who was capable of mastering anything that caught his attention. Everyone who knew him will miss him. Dear Johnnie, Rest In Peace.
