Obituary for N.R. Smith

Visitation will be 6-7:30 PM Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the funeral home. The family will be present to greet the friends.

Services will be held at Vondel Smith Mortuary South Colonial Chapel, Oklahoma City on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 10:00 am. Rev. Zack Hinson will officiate the service and Dr. Tim Eaton will present the obituary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Randall University, 3701 S. I-35 Service Road, Moore, OK 73160.

N. R. Smith was born, August 12, 1931 at Loco, Oklahoma to Noah R. and Ora N. Smith. He passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at the age of 91.

N. R. grew up at Fox, Oklahoma and attended all twelve years of public school at Fox; graduating from Fox High School in 1949. He attended Free Will Baptist Bible College, Nashville, Tennessee and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree. Also, earned the Master of Divinity degree and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Rice Seminary, Lithonia, Georgia.

His church membership is in the Carthage Free Will Baptist Church, Carthage, Missouri. He was ordained to the ministry in August, 1950 and pastored churches in Tennessee, Missouri and Oklahoma. Also served as the Executive Director for Oklahoma Free Will Baptists and the Free Will Baptist Sunday School Department as Promotional Secretary/Business Manager.

He taught the first class session of Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College (now Randall University) and taught at the college part-time for several years. He also served as Public Relations/Director of Planned Giving for the college.

He pastored part-time churches and established an insurance and retirement business earning the designation of Certified Estate Planner.

He married Cathern Pettry on August 13, 1950, Beckley, West Virginia. Of this union, they had two sons, James R. Smith and Timothy W. Smith.

Surviving are two sons, James R. Smith and his wife Melinda and Timothy W. Smith and wife, Sue; five grandchildren, Mark Smith, Daniel Smith, Melissa Bremner, Dakota Smith and Phoenix Ketchum: six great grandchildren; One sister-in-law, Coretta Ephrem ; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Cathern Smith; his father and mother, Noah and Ora Smith; two brothers, Bill Smith and Ralph Smith, and one sister, Margaret Bussing.

Honorary Pallbearers are Mark Smith, Daniel Smith, Melissa Bremner, Dakota Smith, Tim Eaton, and Dennis Cariker.
