Obituary for Srinivas Chamkur Rao
Dr. Srinivas Chamkur Rao was born March 25, 1940 in Hyderabad, India the son of Gopal Chamkur Swamy and Anamma. He completed this life on Friday, November 25, 2022 in Oklahoma City at the age of 82.
Dr. Rao came to the United States to receive his education. He completed his undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University going on to earn his doctorate in Agronomy from Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Rao was an Agricultural Research Scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Oklahoma for over 30 years, with several published scientific articles and textbook chapters to his credit.
Dr. Rao married Anjani Mangini in India. They immigrated to the United States to pursue their education. As one of the first Indian families to settle in Oklahoma City, he was very involved in many community activities, which included welcoming new families into our community.
One of his proudest accomplishments was taking part in the groundbreaking of our beloved Hindu temple, for which he was an active member for many years. His countless hours of service and devotion were benefited by many.
His weekends were usually spent cheering on his OSU and Dallas Cowboys football teams, as well as spending time with his family and friends.
Dr. Rao was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Dr. Rao is survived by his wife, Anjani; his daughter, Dr. Shila Kumar and her husband Naveen of Tulsa, OK; his sons, Dr. Madan Rao and his wife Susan of Austin, TX and Dr. Murli Rao and his wife Kathryn of Baton Rouge, LA; his grandchildren, Vaishnavi Kumar, Avinash Kumar, Sophia Rao, Asha Rao, Guiliana Rao and Anika Rao; as well as 5 brothers and 5 sisters living in India.
Hindu prayers followed by cremation will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 1, 2022 in the Vondel Smith Mortuary North Chapel, 13125 N. MacArthur Blvd.
