Obituary for Wanda Genevieve Jay (Covington)

Wanda Genevieve Jay
October 2, 1921 ~ January 29, 2022

Wanda Genevieve Jay was born as the third child of Edward and Dovie Covington on October 2, 1921 in Sallisaw, OK. She died in Tulsa, OK on January 29, 2022 at the age of 100 from complications due to Congestive Heart Failure and a virus we will not mention. She is survived by a daughter and husband, Deanna and Mike Story; grandchildren, Phillip Riley, Randal Riley, Tim Riley, Kendall Riley, Cindy Riley, Kevin Riley, Jeremy Story and Joshua Story; great grandchildren Connor Riley, Haley Butler, Ashton Riley, Ashley Riley, Gina Riley, Oscar Riley, Noah Story, Asher Story, Katie Story and Jace Story; great great grandchildren Avery Riley and Riano Riley and a niece Jean Goad and nephew James Chafin. She is preceded in death by two husbands John Riley and Dewey Jay; three children Deloris Riley, Don Riley and Edward Riley; three sisters Dorothy Chafin, Vinita Covington, Pauline Harbolt and a brother Wendell Covington; and two grandsons Ricky Riley and Brian Riley. Wanda married the love of her life, John Riley, at the age of 15. She worked in her dads shoe shop which he hoped she and John take over someday. Wanda was a homemaker most of her child rearing years and had three children Deloris, Don and Edward. At the age of 12 her oldest Deloris drowned. Losing a child inspired Wanda to seek a relationship with Jesus, in order to see her daughter again. This decision changed her life. She later had another daughter Deanna. Wanda’s passion was her faith in Jesus. She loved serving in her church, Faith Tabernacle for many years. She loved her family and she loved to travel and sew. Later she worked in a custom drapery shop for 17 years. She was always up for a trip or bus tour. Wanda loved people! Couldn’t get enough of company and parties. Everyone who met her instantly loved her. She was elected queen at Meadowlake Assisted Living where she lived for 7 years. After that we referred to her as the queen. She always took care of people. She helped her sisters care for her parents and had them both living in her home until they died. She cared for her sister Vinita who had Parkinsons Disease and her brother Wendel until their deaths. She also took care of John after he had a stroke. She was strong emotionally, spiritually and physically. She was married 48 years to John Riley until his death. She remarried Dewey Jay four years later and they were married 30 years. They enjoyed traveling and their families. She enjoyed being married! She spent the last four years living with her daughter Deanna in Tulsa where she attended a Baptist Church for the first time. She loved the Pastor and the people. As she aged she lost her eyesight to Macular Degeneration, lost most of her hearing, and suffered with severe arthritis. She persevered each day never really complaining other than “Why am I still here? Why has God left me here?” She will be missed by her loved ones and all who knew her! We all rejoice that she is no longer in pain, can see those pearly gates clearly and run down the streets of gold!
